To combat a growing skilled labour shortage in Ireland’s transport industry, Ministers Peter Burke and Alan Dillon have announced a significant expansion of Critical Skills Employment Permit quotas. Starting 7th April 2025, the reforms allocate 200 new permits for car mechanics, 200 for HGV and Bus mechanics, and 50 for vehicle body repair specialists to address critical workforce gaps. These measures aim to support critical infrastructure projects like BusConnects and ensure roadworthiness amid Ireland’s transition to alternative power vehicles.
Minister Peter Burke emphasized the role of skilled mechanics in maintaining both private and public transport fleets. “Car mechanics ensure road safety, while HGV/Bus specialists are vital for expanding 24-hour BusConnects routes and transitioning to eco-friendly vehicles,” he stated. Minister Alan Dillon added that these permits will enhance workforce reliability, directly supporting Ireland’s public transport expansion objectives.
The Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP) system targets high-demand roles unable to be filled domestically. By increasing quotas for transport-sector occupations, Ireland addresses urgent gaps while balancing long-term workforce upskilling. The reforms align with the Employment Permits System, which prioritizes EEA recruitment but allows third-country talent intake for critical roles.
